You have a big project coming up, or your company has grown really quickly, or you’re looking to replace someone in a position – whatever the reason, you’re looking to hire someone. Which, in these economic times, is a feat within itself. You want to make sure you get this hire right and one of the questions you may be having is: Should this employee be a contract or direct hire?
There are pros and cons to both – check out our reasons below:
Depending on the position you are looking to fill, the types of candidates you are looking for might not be interested in a contract or temp-to-hire type position. That right person for the job might only want a permanent job. It is also much more convenient to hire someone directly than to hire them on a contract.
Hiring someone who has a history of staying with companies shows dedication and longevity. If those are things that are important to you and your company, you should hire directly.
Contractors tend to move from company to company to gain experience in different environments and with different technologies. Which can mean that they could have more experience and knowledge than someone who has been with the same company for a while.
Another reason to not hire direct would be a “try before you buy” type mentailty. If you want to make sure this person is going to be a good fit in your environment you could bring them on in a temp-to-hire role. This way, you can make certain you have the right person for the job.
Often times, the temp-to-hire process could be cheaper than direct hire as well.
