Synergis gives back with Habitat for Humanity

Synergis and other Atlanta area companies completed their second Habitat for Humanity project with intentions to participate again.

Alpharetta, Ga. September 1, 2006 - In April and May of 2006, Synergis employees, along with volunteers from Southern Company, Seagull Software, Federal Home Loan Bank, Pyramid Consulting, AGL, Sapient, ADS, Microsoft, and GE Energy, worked together on a Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) project. The volunteers worked together from the kickoff ceremony on April 20 until the dedication ceremony on May 19. Employees from Synergis along with volunteers from the other participating companies worked alongside William & Scholastica Tangdonfor, the future owners of the Habitat home in Northwest Atlanta. The Tangdonfors immigrated to the United States from the Republic of Cameroon. William came to the US in April 2003, and Scholastica in December 2004. The Tangdonfors are both employees of The Georgia Institute of Technology, and are parents of five.

Commitment to Community
According to Synergis President, Doug Ross, Synergis has a very strong "commitment to the community." For the company, one of the most rewarding parts of being a business is being able to give back to the community that has supported the company over the years. Because of their focus on community, Synergis contributes 10 percent of its yearly earnings to charitable organizations. Some of these organizations include Habitat for Humanity, TechBridge, The American Cancer Society, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Foundation, The American Heart Association and others. The company gladly has supported, and plans to continue supporting these and other social and religious organizations.

To Synergis, the HFHI project is so much more than a simple donation. It is a gift of time, energy, sweat, and compassion. "One of the best parts about participating in Habitat for Humanity projects is that it is not a hand out; it is a leg up," said Doug Ross. "Habitat for Humanity projects are a perfect fit to our company's guiding principals of giving back to our community." The Tangdonfor's home build is the second HFHI project that Synergis has participated in, and Doug Ross says the company will definitely be participating again. Although not an easy project, the rewards are great, and Synergis would like to make Habitat builds annual company events.

About Habitat for Humanity International
Founded by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International is a Christian, non-profit organization. The international headquarters is located in Americus, Georgia. Since its creation, HFHI has built more than 200,000 homes in countries around the world. Since HFHI is not a give-away charity program, families who receive Habitat homes are asked to work on their home as well as other Habitat builds for hundreds of hours, which HFHI considers to be "sweat equity." They then purchase the home interest free and at an affordable price with a mortgage that ranges from seven to 30 years. In the United States, prices for Habitat homes average $60,000. In developing countries prices can be as low as $800. HFHI volunteers work together alongside the future owners of the home.
