Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer with strong geospatial expertise to design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and products. This role will focus on enabling high-quality analytics, powering data-driven decisions, and supporting cross-functional teams through robust data processes, geospatial capabilities, and clear documentation. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and experienced working with modern data tools, cloud data warehouses, and geospatial technologies.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, refine, and maintain data pipelines and processes used for modeling, analysis, and reporting, leveraging SQL (including Snowflake and PostgreSQL), Python, and tools such as Airflow and dbt.
- Utilize geospatial technologies (PostGIS, ArcGIS/ArcPy, QGIS, GeoPandas, etc.) to optimize spatial data storage, normalize datasets, and run spatial queries that power analytics and data products.
- Conduct detailed research and evaluation of internal and external geospatial datasets (POI, geocoding, map layers, geometric shapes), identify changes over time, and maintain shape files, polygons, and metadata.
- Design, create, refine, and maintain data ingestion processes to ensure clean, reliable upstream data sources.
- Operationalize data products through comprehensive documentation, automated data-quality checks, and alerting for changes or anomalies.
- Support data access and consumption through sharing platforms, including dashboard tools and internal data services.
- Troubleshoot and resolve failures across data processes, pipelines, and data products.
- Educate and support internal consumers on data access, usage best practices, and metric or logic definitions to ensure transparency and consistency.
- Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and engineers to deliver full-service data solutions.
- Develop and communicate architecture decisions, coding patterns, and data structure designs, outlining tradeoffs and guiding best practices for the technical team.
- Optimize query and database performance through designing, refining, and maintaining performance-management systems.
- Work with cross-functional partners and external vendors to acquire, transform, and integrate raw data sources.
- Provide timely updates on progress, timelines, and status of planned work to internal stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in SQL, ideally with experience in Snowflake and PostgreSQL.
- Advanced Python skills for data processing, transformation, and automation.
- Hands-on experience with pipeline and orchestration tools such as Airflow and dbt.
- Experience using geospatial tools and libraries such as PostGIS, ArcGIS/ArcPy, QGIS, GeoPandas, or similar.
- Proven ability to design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ingestion processes.
- Strong understanding of geospatial datasets, storage formats, and metadata management.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex data pipeline issues.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborative mindset and experience working across data science, analytics, and engineering teams.
