Improving Accessibility in UX Design Certificates

This project enhanced the Grow with Google UX Design Certificate by embedding accessibility best practices and inclusive design principles into course content

Google needed accessibility expertise integrated into newly developed certification programs:

  • Four new programs in development, each with large content creation teams
  • Limited accessibility knowledge across instructional designers, writers, and designers
  • Need for consistent, practical accessibility guidelines tailored to multiple creative roles
  • Weekly deadlines required rapid reviews, guidance, and corrections

Synergis acted as the Accessibility Subject Matter Expert for Grow with Google:

Reviewed all new content including readings, video storyboards, and quizzes

Provided ongoing support, with 1:1 and small group sessions through open office hours and G-chat

Authored an “Accessibility Help Center”, built on Google Sites for easy team access

Tailored accessibility guidance for instructional designers, education writers, graphic designers, motion designers, and videographers

The engagement embedded accessibility throughout the certification content:

  • Added new lessons focused on inclusive design principles
  • Developed content mastery checkpoints for accessibility understanding
  • Ensured accessibility reviews were integrated into the content creation process
  • Supported large distributed teams, making accessibility expertise accessible in real-time
