Windows/VMware Engineer
Birmingham, AL 35243 – hybrid 4 days onsite

JOB SUMMARY:   
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Systems Analyst to join our client’s Generation Specialized Infrastructure team. The successful candidate will be responsible for engineering, implementing, and supporting Enterprise-Class Windows based server systems as well as VMware hardware and hypervisor platforms within segmented networking environments. This includes managing and maintaining virtualized server environments and providing technical support for VMware VCF products, such as vSphere, vCenter, NSX, and vSAN. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in enterprise scale Windows server system administration, active directory and domain management, virtualization, storage, and networking technologies.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing and implementing solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our Windows systems, domain infrastructure and VMware products and services.  This role also will support F5 proxies, Infoblox appliances and other technologies as needed.  This position requires excellent problem-solving and customer service skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with other IT professionals. Some after-hours and/or on-call work is required.
A comprehensive understanding of troubleshooting and diagnosing network traffic flows, firewall connectivity, ports, and services using networking tools is essential. Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls is preferred. The successful candidate will design and implement the server side of the virtual and physical networking needed to support a Purdue Reference Model networking environment and associated network segmentation.  This will require demonstrating a solid working knowledge of assessing both North-South and East-West traffic when deploying and maintaining systems within segmented networks.
The Generation Specialized Infrastructure team supports the compute and data management needs of our Generation Fleet Operations and Trading, Commercial Operations and Real-Time Operations business partners.  The successful candidate will operate in a Sarbanes-Oxley regulatory controls environment, requiring meticulous attention to detail with consistent adherence to compliance standards. The ability to effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities/details, meet schedules, and deliver on customer commitments is crucial.
Professional oral and written communication skills are required, especially pertaining to managing a regulatory environment, collecting evidence, and documenting potential non-compliance events. A high level of demonstrated self-initiative and self-learning ability is also essential for this role.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • 5+ years of designing, supporting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and administering hardware and software in a virtual environment
  • Proficient with VMware technologies like VMware High-Availability, VMware vMotion, VMware DRS, VMware vCenter and vSphere Lifecycle Manager, vSphere Networking, VMware Web console, VMRC, VAMI, and VMTools
  • Install, configure, upgrade and support VMware ESXi and vCenter
  • Install, configure, upgrade and support Microsoft Windows server based systems and software
  • Virtual infrastructure lifecycle management including VM guest deployments and PowerCLI automated build streams
  • Experience with VMware integrated networking, firewalls, ports and services, security, and related tools
  • Configure the virtual and physical (switch based) networking needed to support a virtual environment
  • Solid working knowledge of deploying systems within segmented networks preferred
  • Experience administering Windows and/or Linux systems
  • Ability to operate in a regulatory controls environment which requires meticulous attention to detail with consistent adherence to compliance standards
  • Ability to effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities/details, meet schedules, and deliver on customer commitments

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Engineering, installation and maintenance of VMware hardware, hypervisors, and system software while following compliance and security standards, meeting project timelines, following documented processes and change procedures, and meeting customer requirements
  • Engineering, installation and maintenance of Microsoft Windows Servers and system software in clustered / high availability configurations while following compliance and security standards, meeting project timelines, following documented processes and change procedures, and meeting customer requirements
  • Ability to navigate operating in a hands-off datacenter environment, remotely diagnosing issues, guiding others in physical system configuration, evaluation and repair as needed
  • Provide full life-cycle management for servers and system software including host deployments, cluster deployments, cluster workload migrations, and performing DR scenarios
  • Provide second level technical support to team members, customers, and other areas both within and outside of IT
  • Performance tuning of VMware ESXi and Microsoft Windows based server deployments
  • Installations for security patches, functional patches, and version upgrades
  • Knowledge of security policies and how cyber security impacts the technology environment
  • Understanding of rules and regulations that govern the use and management of technology, such as Sarbanes Oxley and internal policies
  • Communicate progress, problems and best practices to management, team-leads and teammates

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelors in CS or MIS strongly preferred; five (5) years of relevant technical experience is an acceptable substitute
  • A minimum of five (5) to eight (8) years of service (depending on job level), providing technical and organizational support for in-scope technologies.
  • Appropriate technology, security, and/or compliance certifications are highly desired

The compensation range for this position is $50 to $58/hr W2 (dependent on factors including but not limited to client requirements, experience, statutory considerations, and location).
